(Cover) – EN Fitness & Wellbeing – Scary new research has found that drinking just one alcoholic drink a day can shorten your life. Our drinking habits change as we get older, and we tend to swap binge drinking benders for a couple of pints after work with colleagues, or a bottle of wine over dinner. But experts are now warning that drinking every day could have devastating effects on our health and life expectancy. In a new report, published in The Lancet, it was found those consuming more than five 175ml glasses of wine or pints of beer each week were at greater risk of strokes, heart failure and fatal aneurysms.Researchers, led by Dr. Angela Wood from the University of Cambridge, analysed 600,000 drinkers from 83 studies across 19 countries, and concluded drinking five to 10 alcoholic drinks a week was likely to shorten a person’s life by up to six months.Scientists said that drinking on all levels increases the risk of cardiovascular illnesses, and for every 12.5 units of alcohol a week, the risk of fatal hypertensive diseases were raised by 24 per cent, fatal aortic aneurysms by 15 per cent, strokes by 14 per cent and heart failure by nine per cent. “The key message of this research is that, if you already drink alcohol, drinking less may help you live longer and lower your risk of several cardiovascular conditions,” Dr. Wood told the British Heart Foundation. “Alcohol consumption is associated with a slightly lower risk of non-fatal heart attacks but this must be balanced against the higher risk associated with other serious – and potentially fatal – cardiovascular diseases.”Victoria Taylor, senior dietician at the British Heart Foundation, added that alcohol guidelines should serve as a limit and not a target.© Cover Media
